Stanford-le-Hope like most other towns and villages has a rich and diverse history and this account will attempt to cover some of this history from pre-Roman times until the Second World War. It does not include the history of the parish Church of St. Margarets of Antioch as this has been written about in detail by William Palin in his essay Stifford and Its Neighbourhood and more recently by Aubrey Saunders in Stanford le Hope, A History of Church and Village.
